Finding a car’s optional equipment by VIN: see what is really fitted

Two cars, same model, same year, similar mileage – and yet thousands of francs apart in price. The reason is often the optional equipment: packages, driver assistance, leather, a panoramic roof or a premium sound system. Anyone buying, selling or trading in a car should therefore know exactly what is fitted.

Why optional equipment matters

  • When buying: check that the equipment in the listing really came from the factory.
  • When selling: a complete listing is found more easily and justifies the price.
  • For dealer purchases and trade-ins: a reliable basis for the offer.
  • For valuation: equipment feeds directly into the market value – see Car valuation in Switzerland.

Why a free decoder cannot show it

The 17 characters of the VIN reveal the manufacturer, country of origin and, depending on the manufacturer, the model year (see Decoding a VIN). The options ticked when the car was ordered are not in the number – that data sits with the manufacturer. A decoder that only reads the VIN’s structure simply cannot know it.

Where else to look

  • Original order or purchase documents: the most reliable source, but often missing for used cars.
  • Equipment sticker: some manufacturers put a list of option codes in the service book or in the boot (e.g. in the spare-wheel well). Without the manufacturer’s code list they are hard to read.
  • Brand dealer: can often look up the data – usually only for its own customers and with a wait.
  • The car itself: some options are visible, others are not (driver assistance, engine variant, suspension). And visible parts may have been retrofitted.

The professional VIN lookup

The faster way is a professional VIN lookup, which matches the VIN against manufacturer data. You get a report with:

  • the factory equipment of that specific vehicle,
  • the optional equipment, including packages and individual options,
  • technical data such as engine variant, power, transmission and drive,
  • exterior colour, interior and production details.

With the NXTRA VIN decoder you first check the number for free, then order the equipment report if you need it. It arrives by email within seconds – no account, no subscription.

Important: factory equipment only

A VIN lookup shows what the vehicle had when it left the factory. Retrofits, modifications or parts removed later are not included. Always compare the report with the car – any differences are a good reason to ask the seller questions.

For dealers: equipment straight into the listing

Dealers save the most time when the lookup is built into vehicle entry. In the NXTRA car dealer software, every lookup becomes a vehicle with one click: equipment (translated into your listing languages), technical data and – for a valuation – a suggested price are filled in instantly.

In short

  • Optional equipment has a major impact on a car’s value.
  • It is not in the VIN itself but in the manufacturer’s data.
  • A professional VIN lookup delivers factory and optional equipment within seconds.
  • Retrofits are not included – always compare with the car.
